4 application systems for the industry

In the industrial sector there are an infinite number of possible scenarios when it comes to covering a surface: from truck cabs to large structures.

In the industrial sector there are an infinite number of possible scenarios when it comes to covering a surface: from truck cabs to large structures. For this reason, before starting the application, the characteristics of the area to be coated must be known in order to choose the most suitable application equipment, as well as the products, which will allow us to be more efficient in time and materials.

Factors influencing the choice of equipment:

  • Part material. The most common materials are metals, non-metallic substrates such as plastics, composites, glass and wood.
  • Geometry and size of the part. The shape and size of the surface to be painted influences the spray technology used, the production rate obtained and the efficiency of application. It is worth mentioning that in parts with complex geometry it will be more difficult to achieve the appropriate thickness to protect the part against corrosion.
  • Paint production and consumption level.
    1. For less than 5l per day, a gravity-feed spray gun would suffice.
    2. From 5l to 15l per day, it is recommended to have an assisted spray gun setup with a compressor.
    3. Over 15l per day. Depending on the size of the company, air-assisted equipment with a pressure pump or even fully automated equipment is recommended.
  • Type of coatings. There are two types of solvent-based coatings, which are currently the most common. On the other hand, in the market we also find water based coatings that are gaining popularity, since they are more respectful and sustainable with the environment and people’s health.

Types of application equipment

Next, we explain the four main application systems. If you want to know more about their operation and characteristics, you can watch the webinar: Optimize processes with the right application equipment.

  • Aerographic application.

Its main characteristic is that compressed air is used to atomize the paint. This system provides low micron ratings, but with a great quality finish. For this reason, it is used in the refinishing sector of commercial vehicles, signs, street furniture, etc. On small surfaces that require a fine-detailed finish. The most recommended products for this type of application are ACRY-PUR 902G or ACRY-PUR 901G that offer a great finish.

  • Air-assisted application

This system provides a good finish but with significant time savings and can be used on both small and large parts. It is especially indicated for trailers, rods, finishing structures, grills, industrial machinery, etc.

  • Airless application.

Application with this equipment is characterized by a high pressure on the product passing through a very small nozzle that provides efficiency and productivity.

It is used on large surfaces such as chassis coverings, structures and other surfaces that require corrosion protection, with paints rich in zinc and adding the thixotropic additive that helps the resins to acquire more thixotropic properties so that they do not sag during the application.

The solution PUR 844 Smartech is specifically developed for this type of Airless application.

Its main feature is the optimization of spraying, the paint is attracted to the piece, like a magnet creating an enveloping effect, thanks to the negative charge of the paint. For this to work, you need to add an electrostatic additive to the paint and connect the piece to be painted to a ground-wire connection.

It is a good option for pieces that have corners or complex geometries; such as chassis, bars, street furniture, etc.

Choosing the most suitable application equipment

As you have seen, there are several factors that influence the choice of application equipment. There are several systems and equipment on the market that help us achieve our refinishing goals and be much more efficient. If you want to know even more about the different equipment we have discussed, you can watch the webinar Optimize processes with the right application equipment.
