How to choose the right primer?

Normally, a primer is the first anchor coat that prepares the surface for subsequent painting. One of the most common mistakes that results in repeat applications is not paying attention to the purpose we are aiming to achieve when we are going to paint and which primer is the most appropriate.

Not all primers are the same

When working, we come across various features that we must take into account when choosing a primer, such as: the materials to be applied to, the working conditions and other requirements, including the finish we want to achieve.

What are primers used for?

Primers are used in the industrial sector to:

  • Give adherence to surfaces, whether metallic or non-metallic.
  • Guarantee corrosion protection against agents such as …
  • Enable the sealing of previous coats of paint.
  • Facilitate work process optimization.
  • Minimize small defects that the surface we want to paint may have.
  • Even out the surface before painting to provide the best possible finish.

There are different categories of primers, which offer solutions to ensure the best performance in each possible scenario. The most common are:

  • Epoxy
  • PU
  • SINT
  • Vinyls
  • 1K and 2K
  • Sealants and intermediate coats
  • Wet-on-wet
  • And sandables

How to choose the right primer?

In order to choose the right primer we have to look at various parameters:

  1. The estimated time before subsequent repainting maintenance is due.

The surfaces on which it will be applied. We will not use the same process on sandblasted steel as on plastic or glass; each substrate has special characteristics that require different products and applications.

  2. Application conditions. It is not the same to apply in a booth, where the conditions are controlled, as in an open area, where there is no aspiration, ventilation and we cannot control the temperature or humidity of the environment.
  3. Total thicknesses. The thickness applied on a blasted surface is different from the anchorage sought on a moving part, where high thickness can hinder its functionality.

How can primer be applied?

There are different ways to apply a primer, including with the use of the following tools or equipment:

  • Airmix/Airless
  • Pressure tanks
  • Pressure pumps
  • Conventional gravity/suction guns
  • Electrostatic equipment
  • Brush/Roller

Choosing the right primer will give you a great finish

One of the most common mistakes that results in repeat applications is not stopping for 2 minutes to understand the purpose and determine which primer is the most appropriate.

A solid foundation is key to being able to do a great job.
